How marketers are utilizing social media in 2010

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, if you’re not in social media or planning to get into social media this year, you’re going to be left behind. Social media marketing is growing faster than anyone could have ever imagined. The social media marketing platform, Flowtown, took the Social Media Examiner’s 2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report and created this awesome infographic.

If you’ve never read the report, download it now. It’s a great look into the state of social media marketing today.

What the infographic points out is that people are not spending huge amounts of time using social media. The majority of marketers (40%) using it only spend 6-10 hours a week, with another 26% spend between 11-15 hours a week. On average people are spending between 1-5 hours a day on social media marketing.

What that means is that with a little more than an hour a day, more than 50% of people using social media marketing are generating qualified leads, which means new business.

Not surprising the biggest tools being used are Twitter and Facebook. They are neck in neck with usage. Twitter comes in with a whopping 88% of marketers using the site; Facebook comes in with a solid 87%. In 2011, it will be interesting to see if there is a wider gap or if the leader changes.

Over the year, marketers are planning to use more social marketing tools. The top tools to use? Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn of course. Not surprising, these are also the areas where marketers want to learn more. What is surprising is how much marketers want to learn about Delicious and StumbleUpon.  That means these sites could see a new resurgence as more people learn the value of their services.

Mobile technology doesn’t play heavily in the report but I expect that to change in the 2011 report. With smart phones taking off this year, mobile apps will play a more important part in any businesses’ future online efforts.

Enjoy the infographic and let us know what you think about how marketers are using social media this year.
